Moss on new materials
Preserved moss needs a base, and that base doesn't always have to be newly produced. In our workshop in Porto we test how moss works with natural and recycled materials. The goal: walls that look good, save resources and noticeably improve room acoustics.

Cork comes from Portugal, right on our doorstep. Only the bark of the cork oak is harvested, the tree stays standing and regrows it. Cork is light, elastic and naturally sound-damping.
Our moss hexagons are already made on cork. More cork products are in the works.

Retired fishing nets from the North Sea, Baltic and Atlantic are a real problem in the ocean. Cleaned and sorted, they become a design element for us: as a structure beneath the moss or as a colourful accent.

Rubber granulate
Bonded granulate from recycled rubber is dense, robust and dampens sound and impact noise. As a base panel it gives moss pictures stability and a calm, dark edge.
In testing
Felt
Acoustic felt, for example from recycled PET bottles, is soft, light and absorbs sound well. Combined with moss it makes panels that feel warm and can noticeably reduce reverberation.

Wood
We use oak and offcut wood for frames and bases. Classic, warm and durable, and offcuts from processing get a useful second life.

Your material?
Do you have leftover material from production or a refit that deserves a second life, for a brand wall, say? We're happy to check whether and how moss can be applied to it.
Talk to us →Why moss sounds good
Hard surfaces such as concrete, glass and plaster reflect almost all sound, the room echoes. Preserved moss, by contrast, has an open, porous structure: sound enters, is broken up and partly absorbed.
The effect is strongest for voices and mid to high frequencies, exactly where offices, receptions and restaurants get loud.
- Pole moss and dense, deep surfaces work better than flat moss
- A sound-absorbing base such as cork, felt or rubber granulate boosts the effect
- The larger the surface, the clearer the difference
- No watering, no light needed, the moss stays green
Planning a project and want to try one of these materials? We'll send samples and advise on build and effect.
